10 Items a Man Should Have

0 Comments 28 December 2009

As we were spit balling ideas for our next post, the thing that we kept asking ourselves was what is most important to a man’s closet. We try to focus our post on items a gentleman would use and what he needs because aside from trends and style, developing and maintaining a versatile and classic wardrobe is at the top of our list. Taking many things into account, we have developed a 10 item list of all pieces any man should have in his wardrobe. This list was put together with the idea of a well dressed man and the core items he would use from day to day and to an evening out as well. All pieces below can be mixed and matched. So lets get into it.
We’re starting off with a black 2 Button Blazer suit. A black suit can be worn to a wedding or to an evening out. You can always change your button front, tie or pocket square to match any occasion. Nothing looks better than a Black suit, white pressed tailored shirt, white pocket square and black oxfords. Navy, Grey and khaki colors are great as well but basic Black is essential so invest in a good suit and have it tailored. http://www.jcrew.com/
A white button front is probably what you’d wear with your suit but its also a garment that you’ll get a tremendous use out of. For this cold weather, wear it under a sweater or knit vest. Solid colors are the key here. When you wear a shirt with a pattern or of a particular pop color, chances are that’s whats in style at the moment so in time that same shirt will look dated. A solid color white Button down will never go out of style.

Shoes can be a mans best friend also and Black Wingtips or Oxfords is a good starting point of that relationship. Sure you don’t want to wear a shiny pair of shoes with your jeans but the more you wear in a pair of shoes the better they look with jeans. So find a comfy pair and wear them in bed cause the more you wear them the more character they’ll develop.

As we said in previous post, Jeans can be worn anywhere nowadays and Levis 501 rigid are the perfect pair to commit to. After you wear them for a while, they begin to develop their own creases and marks…the kind that labels pay factories to produce on their denim. Wash them and they shrink to the right size for your fit. You don’t have to wash your denim weekly. Put it off as long as you can. Unless you spilled coffee on your front, try not washing your denim for a month and the feel and look of your jeans will be second to none.

A trench coat doesn’t have to be worn only in the rain but the fact that it looks so good and serves that function is a plus. Single breasted or double breasted trench coats look great over a suit or even with a pair of jeans but the fact is you need a coat to keep you dry so it should definitely be in your closet.

Sure a bubble coat will keep you warm but not everyone can wear a bubble coat with a pair of jeans and wingtips and get away with it. However, you can wear a pair of sneakers and jeans with a pea coat and you’re good to go. A warm coat is key and the Pea coat is versatile enough to wear with almost anything. http://www.zappos.com/
A drivers cap has been around since before people were driving and why is that? Because its a handsome looking hat that everyman should have. You can wear this hat with your suit or just with the trench, denim, wingtips and whatever top and still look sharp and it keeps your head nice and toasty.

Just Like the White Button front, the same rules apply with the light weight V-neck sweater. Solid color and basic colors are key. Choose a Black, Navy or Grey. It’ll go with almost anything and is an awesome layering piece as well as a single item.

Ahhhh sneakers. Gotta say we’ve been a huge fan of sneakers for years and with being such a consumer of the sneaker we’ve come to this conclusion. You absolutely need a clean solid pair of white tennis sneakers to go to at all times and in our opinion the best silhouette and kick for comfort is the Adidas Stan Smith. You should have a white pair to go to is the bottom line and the SS are a nice choice as well as are these Common Projects.

Finally we come to the end of our list and we will finish off with the T-shirt. Another absolute must have cause when you don’t want to wear a sweater or a Button front and you want to let the guns breathe, a T-shirt is your pal. We really love the feel of the sleep wear T-shirt, the ones that usually come 2 in a pack. Go with what you like best…a V-neck Crewneck Heather Grey, Black or White. Get solid because graphics are cool but a solid tee wont be yesterday’s Hype. Cheers.
